“How you work with clients like Tillamook and Target?” I’m asked this question a LOT. I get you–you’re dreaming big (as you should!) When I started pursuing freelance photography, I used this tip to pitch my dream clients. The truth is, landing your dream client starts with a very simple step.
Get to know their visual brand
The first step to working with your dream client is understanding their visual brand. Search through the images they use in their social media, and in their advertising, etc.
Create a mood board of their advertising and social media imagery
Hop over to Pinterest and search this brand. Create a mood board based around the images that they’ve created to represent their brand and story.
Use the mood board to identify themes
Once you get your mood board full enough–about 20 images or so–spend some time within that board.
Ask yourself:
- What is the theme in their images?
- What is the styling? (clean, vibrant, natural, storytelling)
- What is the lighting like? (bright, moody, dark, soft)
- What kind of backgrounds do they use?
- What are the kind of things that are similar across their mediums (social media, ads, packaging?)
Use this as a a tool to diversify your portfolio
After you’ve identified themes, you know exactly the kind of imagery you need to add to your portfolio. Carve out some time in your calendar for some personal shoots and let those themes guide you while incorporating your own creative style.
From there you will use this imagery to pitch this brand and make it a complete no brainer for them to say “Absolutely, yes, I wanna work with you!”
It really is that simple! Getting to know your dream client’s visual brand identity is the best place to start. Now get out there and start landing those brands!
